The Gulf Atlantic Diocese and Networking Opportunities for Global Missions
The Gulf Atlantic Diocese: Global Mission and Partnerships
The Gulf Atlantic Diocese features parishes that are deeply committed to global mission and partnerships. We are beginning to implement quarterly Zoom calls with our parish missions advocates to learn from each other, dream about what we can do together, and provide updates on what is happening in the Province.
A Growing Culture of Mission Engagement
This past World Mission Sunday was a highlight for many of our parishes. Missions “fairs” were held featuring global mission partners, special guests spoke in the services to keep parishioners aware of the need for the gospel around the world, and much more. My own church, Church of the Apostles, extends into a Global Mission Weekend, where we also feature local ministry partners. This year we held a half day spiritual retreat for local ministry leaders on Saturday to give them an opportunity to “recharge” their spirits for the hard work they may have in their organizations.
Expanding Partnership Vision
We recognize that some churches already have global partnerships. At the same time, we are exploring opportunities for a broader diocesan partnership—one that fosters meaningful relationships with one or two Anglican dioceses overseas. Bishop Alex Farmer and I are exploring early opportunities in this area.
Looking Ahead
Over time, we hope to develop short-term partnerships that allow several churches to send teams on short-term summer mission trips. We are also featuring more missions organizations in our Synod time to encourage more interaction with attendees and continued exploration of short-term opportunities.
A Model from the Past
In 2014, when Anglican Frontier Missions (AFM) held their cross cultural worker conference in Albania, several churches came together to help. Two churches sent workers to work with children so parents could more fully participate in the worship services. At least one church made a significant financial contribution to help underwrite the conference.
Shared Hope
We are excited to be living in resurrection power and looking for ways to get this message of the resurrected Christ all around the world.
Respectfully,
Deacon Dan Thompson
